Schoolâs Out
The school year ends in Israel on June 30th. I know that in different parts of the northern hemisphere some schools have been out for several weeks, and in others that wonât happen for another few weeks; and that in the southern hemisphere youâre talking about winter breakâŚ
Nonetheless, the longs days and weeks of school vacations are here for a good portion of the children around the world, and unfortunately, while I always thought that the warnings that many educators share at the beginning of such festive periods were somewhat of a damper, one item on the weekend news in Israel has caused me to think again. With the exception of the Podcast, the current edition of our newsletter is devoted solely to issues of safety in the home, and our responsibility as IP attorneys both to ourselves understand that obtaining an respecting IP rights is not merely a business matter, but in extreme circumstances (spoiler alert: such as faulty or counterfeit electrical charging devices), it can be the difference between routine and tragedy.
On a different note, for those of us who think of our own school breaks with nostalgia, you may wish to enjoy a further listen to our podcast guest from a couple of years ago, Asher Polani. Asher is a veteran entrepreneur in the Israeli start up scene, and has been involved in founding and growing multiple startups from as far back as the 1980âs, being CEO of FTS & Finjan, and involved in HP-Israel, MINT Technologies, among others. A number of years ago, I posted an article entitled IP Laws and Safety - Why Every Counterfeit Has a Silver Lining. I was reminded of this article and its important message after hearing this morningâs news in Israel, in which it was reported that a 45 year old mother had tragically died in a house fire caused when a charger for an electric bike burst into flames at the entrance to her home. One of the lessons that was stressed by the firefighters who were interviewed following this disaster, was that counterfeit chargers were more likely to overheat and catch fire than the original chargers, namely, the chargers provided by the manufacturer of the bicycle. I donât know if that was what caused the fire in this instance. Also, itâs very tempting to think that the original brand manufacturers are always going to charge more than the counterfeit manufacturers, and, in any case, âwhatâs the chance of a tragedy like this happening?â
As IP attorneys, we know what patenting and branding mean. We know how they truly help keep society safe. And if for this reason only, we need to raise awareness of the dangers of purchasing counterfeits.
