Good Fences Make for Good Neighbors
The present newsletter addresses the way in which the monopolistic rights conferred by patent rights can be used for the good, as a way of both harmonizing technologies for the greater good, and by enabling an almost mentoring type of approach by large corporate patent holders to the start up sector. Even when zooming out globally, I briefly touch on the need to harmonize an approach when it comes to cross-border, distributed infringement. The current issue of our newsletter comes in the wake of the IPBC Asia conference in Tokyo which, as usual, provided an interesting insight into some of the main issues facing in-house practitioners in the tech sector, as 2024 reaches a close.
In the meantime, in the latest issue of our podcast, Avraham interviewed Sigal Kalmanson, CEO and founder of Starget Pharma, an Israeli early-stage clinical company developing a new class of Smart Targeted Radioligands for precision oncology of hard-to-heal cancers.

According to the Times Gazette, Benjamin Franklin wrote in the âPoor Richards Almanacâ âLove your neighbor as yourself, yet donât pull down your hedges.â This is based, of course, on the biblical passage âlove your fellow person as yourselfâ, and was the basis for the well-known passage in Robert Frostâs poem âNorth of Bostonâ in which he writes âMy apple trees will never get across and eat the cones under his pines, I tell him. He only says âGood fences make good neighborsâ.
Why is this relevant to IP? Iâll get to that later.
In the meantime, during a very intensive two daysâ worth of IP talks, panel discussions and round tables in Tokyo, I felt as if I was caught up in a whirlwind of IP heresy; subjects that threatened to shake the very foundations on which intellectual property rights are based. This happened during the November 2024 edition of the IPBC Asia conference, which I was privileged to attend, together with my colleague Dr. Mike Hammer.
