Examination in English
Office Actions and other letters issued from the onset of substantive examination of Israel patent applications are, by default, in Hebrew. However, the Israel Patent Office (ILPO) allows applicants to choose to receive office actions in the English language, thus obviating the need to translate office actions from Hebrew. All applications for which substantive examination has not yet started are eligible.
Pros & Cons
Quality: Most of the examiners at the ILPO are not native English speakers, but the ILPO has been performing search and examination of PCT applications as a recognized International Searching Authority, and has been communicating with applicants throughout the PCT examination process in English. Based on our experience, the level of English in such communications is, on the whole, reasonable.
Savings: We have further found that as office actions no longer have to be translated from Hebrew into English, there is a significant cost savings accruing to the applicant.
As of January 1, 2024 there is a small charge for requesting office actions in English.
